WORKSHOP SHEDULE

Background

Bangladesh is experiencing significant growth in its livestock sector, with increasing demands both domestically and internationally. As a major contributor to the national economy, livestock production plays an important role in rural livelihoods, food security, and export potential. Recently, the agriculture minister of Bangladesh has prioritised efforts to promote livestock exports. However, meeting the standards and expectations of global markets requires not only efficient production systems but also a strong emphasis on animal welfare.

Animal welfare informed by the principles of ethology- the scientific study of animal behaviour—has become an essential criterion for livestock export worldwide. International buyers and consumers are increasingly prioritising products sourced from systems that ensure humane treatment, health, and well-being of animals. For Bangladesh to strengthen its position in the global livestock market and expand export opportunities, it is crucial to align its practices with these evolving expectations.

The “Enhancing Animal Welfare and Human Coexistence Through Ethological Insights” workshop aims to bring together researchers, WOAH focal points of Bangladesh for animal welfare, veterinarians, policymakers, producers, and exporters to discuss the importance of animal welfare from a scientific and practical perspective. By focusing on ethology-driven approaches, the workshop will highlight how understanding animal behaviour can improve welfare outcomes, enhance productivity, and meet international export requirements.

This workshop is particularly timely for Bangladesh, where integrating animal welfare best practices can unlock new export markets, add value to livestock products, and foster sustainable coexistence between humans and animals. By promoting knowledge exchange and capacity building, the event will support Bangladesh’s efforts to position itself as a responsible and competitive livestock exporter on the global stage.
